Toronto winters often leave much to be desired. Grey day after grey day can lead to weeks of having not seen the sunshine, and a strong desire to just stay inside. Thankfully, our city is full of organizations and events that give Torontonians plenty of reasons to get outside and enjoy themselves, no matter what the weather is like. Sugar Shack is one such event! Typically a trip down to the waterfront is ideal for the summer time, but Sugar Shack makes it a beloved winter activity as well. This year the event will be bigger and sweeter than ever. Here's what to look forward to.
On the first weekend of March Break, Waterfront Toronto invites people to come join them in the corner of lower Jarvis and Queens Quay to take part in #SugarShackTO2017! From March 11th to the 12th they'll be putting on a traditional 'cabane à sucre' extravaganza! Last year's event saw big numbers come out, which meant there were some long lines experienced by those hoping for sweet treats. This year there will be two sugar shacks to better accommodate attendees.
The weekend will boast lots of family-friendly fun! Look forward to the winter marketplace where you'll have your choice of delicious Toronto eats, such as treats from Chimney Stax, Loaded Pierogi, Kung Fu Dawg, and Nut and Fudge. The two sugar shacks will be offering authentic Ontario maple taffy which - let's be honest - is one of the main reasons to visit! There will also be maple sugaring demonstrations being done, so you and your kids can see how these sugary confections are made. Don't forget to stop by the Redpath Sugar booth for even more sweet treats, as well as free samples. For those of you who enjoy a specialty drink now and again, Sugar Shack will also have a bar where you can indulge in Thornbury mulled apple cider, spiked hot cocoa, or a brew from Big Rock Brewery.
Lots of other entertainment will be happening aside from the sweet delicacies. The weekend will be full of live music, as well as 'Zooniversity' where you and your children can interact with and learn about the different animal guests. There will also be ice activities to look forward to. In case you're unfamiliar with this activity, it will include displays such as 'battle of the chainsaws', ice sculptures, painted ice canvases, and ice carving demonstrations. Check out the schedule online for the full itinerary of weekend events that will be happening.
We can't wait to experience this year's Sugar Shack fun!
